About Saffron Walden in Essex

Saffron Walden is a historic market town in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. It is located 12 miles (19 km) north-west of Bishop's Stortford, 18 miles (29 km) south-west of Cambridge and 43 miles (69 km) north of London. The town has a population of about 14,000.

Saffron Walden is home to many historic buildings including the Grade I listed Church of St Mary the Virgin, which dates from the early 13th century, and the Grade II* listed Market Cross, which was built in 1640. The town's historic centre is located within a conservation area which includes more than 400 listed buildings.

The town's name is derived from the Old English for 'saffron field' or 'saffron meadow'. The town was granted a market charter in 1141 and has been a market town since that time. It is also home to the oldest grammar school in Essex, founded in 1595.

The town's economy is largely based on tourism and retail, with a number of shops and restaurants located in the town centre. There are also a number of businesses located on the outskirts of the town.

Saffron Walden is served by two railway stations: Saffron Walden railway station, which is located on the Cambridge–Bishop's Stortford line, and Audley End railway station, which is located on the Braintree Branch Line. The town is also served by a number of bus routes.
