Watford is a town and borough in Hertfordshire, England, 15 miles (24 km) northwest of central London. The town developed on the River Colne on the main road from London to Birmingham. It is a historic market town and was granted a charter by King Henry VIII in 1525. Watford became an urban district under the Local Government Act 1894 and a municipal borough by grant of a charter in 1922. The borough had 90,301 inhabitants at the time of the 2011 census. The economy of Watford is mainly based on service industries, with over three quarters of the borough's employment coming from this sector.
