About Hoylake in Merseyside
Hoylake is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, Merseyside, England. Historically part of Cheshire, it is on the Wirral Peninsula, along the coast of the River Dee, opposite the city of Chester. At the 2011 Census, Hoylake had a population of 18,201.
Hoylake is best known for its seaside setting and for being a venue for golf tournaments including The Open Championship, which it hosted in 2006. Royal Liverpool Golf Club is located in the town.
The town's name is derived from Hoyle Lake, a body of water that was originally adjacent to the shoreline. The name Hoyle Lake is first recorded in 1550, and may be named after a guidebook for card games published in 1627.
The town's main shopping street is Market Street, which contains a number of independent shops as well as branches of national chains. There are also several pubs and restaurants.
Hoylake has a number of primary schools and one secondary school, Hoylake Parade Community College. The town is also home to Wirral Metropolitan College.
Hoylake is served by two railway stations: Hoylake on the Borderlands Line and Meols Cop on the Merseyrail network. Both stations are located on Market Street.
